Exploring Sonic Interaction with Artifacts in Everyday Contexts
نویسندگان
چکیده
This workshop aims to introduce ICAD participants to the use of creative interaction design methods when exploring the design of sonic interactions with computational artefacts. Specifically, focus will be on physical interactions that rely on continuous sonic feedback. Participants will generate future scenarios and concepts for such interactions, and everyday sounding objects in context will be taken as a starting point. By taking part in the workshop activities, participants will get an embodied understanding of the challenges of designing for meaningful and engaging physical interaction with computational sonic artefacts. Methods employed in the workshop will thus be good complements to the cognition or technology-based approaches to designing sounding objects that are mainstream within the ICAD community.

Sound Embodied: Explorations of Sonic Interaction Design for Everyday Objects in a Workshop Setting
We describe an emergent field of considerable relevance to the auditory display community – that of sonic interaction design for everyday artifacts. It is positioned at the intersection of auditory display, product interaction design, and ubiquitous computing. We describe an exploration of this field that we have undertaken in a workshop setting, with an international mix of designers, students...
متن کاملIn Duet with Everyday Urban Settings: A User Study of Sonic City
Sonic City is a wearable system enabling the use of the urban environment as an interface for real-time electronic music making, when walking through and interacting with a city. The device senses everyday interactions and surrounding contexts, and maps this information in real time to the sound processing of urban sounds. We conducted a short-term study with various participants using our prot...
متن کاملSonically Augmented Artifacts: Design Methodology Through Participatory Workshops
Participatory workshops have been organized within the framework of the ANR project Legos that concerns gesture-sound interactive systems. These workshops addressed both theoretical issues and experimentation with prototypes. The first goal was to stimulate new ideas related to the control of everyday objects using sound feedback, and then, to create and experiment with new sonic augmented obje...
متن کاملSonic City: Prototyping a Wearable Experience
Sonic City is a project exploring mobile interaction and wearable technology for everyday music creation. A wearable system has been developed that creates electronic music in real-time based on sensing bodily and environmental factors – thus, a personal soundscape is co-produced by physical movement, local activity, and urban ambiance simply by walking through the city. Applying multi-discipli...
متن کاملThe Flo)(ps: Negotiating Between Habitual and Explorative Gestures
The perceived affordances of an everyday object guide its user toward habitual movements and experiences. Physical actions that are not immediately associated with established body techniques often remain neglected. Can sound activate those potentials for action that remain latent in the physicality of an object? How can the exploration of underused and unusual bodily movements be fostered? Thi...
